Founded in New York City in 1875 by Bohemian immigrant Joseph Bulova, the Bulova Watch Company has been responsible for numerous watch world milestones in its century-plus of existence, and continues to innovate well into the 21st Century.
Here we look at 10 important timepieces from Bulova’s history and discover what they meant for the brand and for the watch industry as a whole.
If you see one that has three or more years difference in the date codes, I suggest that the watch has been re-cased or made from 2 separate watches.
This probably doesn't really matter unless you are a serious collector and are only interested in completely original items.
I can at least say thanks to Agent Orange, Jo T, "mach 0.0013137", Mel and K. Serial numbers may be found on movements, case backs or dials depending on the make, model and age of the watch in question. Newer Breitling models (circa 2001 and beyond) may be dated via a number stamped on the case between the lower lugs.
The code consists of one letter and one number, eg. They used the letter M to signify the decade 1960 to the end of 1969, and the letter N to indicate 1970 to the end of 1979.These watches were also engraved with the owners name and the date- 19 respectively. These must have been the first years that Bulova implemented it's new dating system. However, these numbers are for identification purposes only. There are no number tables that I am aware of to cross reference the date of manufacture with the serial number.
