SFU is one of just three teams in the nation that are undefeated in conference play this season, joining No. SFU is ranked 59th in the RPI, received six votes in this week's USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and was ranked 25th in the nation by HERO Sports. The Colonials rank fifth in the NEC in runs per game (3.78) and batting average (.285). The Pioneers have the second-best ERA in the conference (2.54).They also took photographs and filmed outdoors so comparisons could be made between wing flash in direct sunlight and under a cloudy sky.The video recordings revealed that light flashes were not evident under diffuse light or outdoors under a cloudy sky. Gries adds: "We found that on cloudy days, light flashes from the wings of flying females cannot be seen, which might help explain the low mating activity of these flies on cloudy days.Gries says there are similarities between the blow flies' mate recognition system and Tinder, a dating app that matches approximately 10 million people a day.Tinder users similarly screen for age and sex of prospective matches by using the apps' filtration system.
"We discovered that the immense processing speed of the blow flies' photoreceptors in their large sexually dimorphic eyes played a critical role in their visual mate recognition system," says Gries.
Flies have some of the most elaborate visual systems in the Insecta, with fast visual processing, which was thought to have evolved to match their advanced flight abilities.
Males have larger eyes than females, which may help males perceive visual signals sent by females, and they have specialized 'bright zones' that increase light capture and can help them to detect females' flashing light signals.
The tournament begins on Thursday as SFU, the top seed, battles No. All games of the tournament will be broadcast on NEC Front Row, with John Cabral and Paul Dottino on the call. Senior Brianna Tredway is hitting a team-best .402 with 28 RBI.
